Primroses are native to both Europe and Asia, but are quite common in the American garden. Common Primrose (Primula Acaulis S1 Accord Blue) is often referred to as Common Primrose or English Primrose, and it is extremely popular for adding color to late winter and early spring borders in mild climates. These colorful little gems readily grow from seed, and give a rewarding show with brilliant, clear colors. The variety features brilliant blue 1 1/2 inch blooms that are lightly scented.
Gardeners look forward to setting out Primrose plants each year as they herald the beginning of a new flower season. Primroses make an excellent border plant, and work quite well in alpine and rock gardens. They can be used along pathways, streams, border fronts, or even just in containers.
To grow Primroses from seed, sow them indoors in late fall or early winter, using seed trays with a starter mix. Press the seeds into the soil, but do not cover them, as light is needed for germination. Keep the seeds moist until germination. Once the seedlings develop two or three true leaves, they can be transplanted to a protected outdoor seedbed or individual pots, which is best done in late winter or early spring.
When planting Primrose in its final location, amend the soil with plenty of peat moss and use a slow-release fertilizer. Space the plants 8 inches apart in a partially shaded area. Primula acaulis S1 are known as Common Primrose or English Primrose, and they grow in rosettes from the ground, making them a favorite for early spring beds, borders, and containers. Thanks to breeding programs, Common Primroses are now available in more colors and are more hardy and long-lived.
Primrose grows as a perennial in USDA zones 4 - 7, only reaching a height of 5 - 8 inches. They are a lovely addition to borders with spring bulbs, and the Accord Blue variety has deep violet-blue blooms with contrasting yellow centers. Primulas also make great houseplants. Sow 4 seeds per plant, and start the Common Primrose seed indoors in winter for early spring transplants. Press the seed into the soil but do not cover it, and keep the seed moist. With a temperature range of 60 – 65F, germination is usually in 30 days. Common Primrose is usually resistant to deer.
