The 'Gold Laced Group' of Primula boasts unusual flowers with golden eyes and black petals adorned with golden margins. These charming blooms look stunning when grown in pots alongside other polyanthus and auriculas, and they make for excellent cut flowers in spring floral arrangements.
Planting instructions for this variety are as follows: Primulas begin to flower early in spring, delighting gardeners and eager bumblebees alike with their vibrant petals and colors. Some species even continue to bloom into the early summer months. To grow these plants, simply keep the pots on a cool windowsill and ensure they do not dry out. Later in the spring, they can be transplanted into the garden.
To start, prepare a clean plastic pot or cell packs filled with a soilless potting mix. Stand the containers in hot water and allow them to soak up moisture for an hour, then set them aside to drain overnight. The following day, carefully sprinkle the primula seeds onto the surface of the soilless mix, taking care not to cover them as they require light to germinate. Place a sheet of plastic wrap over the top of the containers, but do not seal or fold the edges under – allow for some air circulation. Position the containers in a bright, cool location and watch for germination in the third or fourth week. Leave the plastic film in place for another week or two as more seeds sprout.
To provide the seeds with enough fresh air, lift the plastic wrap every other day to check on germination. Once the plants have become sturdy and reach a height of three inches (8 cm), move the containers outside, placing them in a shaded area away from wind. Bring the plants back indoors each night. After five days, transplant the seedlings into the garden where they will continue to grow and thrive.
This package includes approximately 10 primula seeds, and instructions are provided in English. Primulas are suitable for growing in USDA Hardiness Zones 1 through 11 and have a germination rate of 90-95%.
