Spotlight on Showy Evening Primrose Grow a garden filled with the stunning Showy Evening Primrose (Oenothera speciosa), native to the lower states of America. These perennial plants reach 12-24 inches tall, bearing pink flowers with dark pink veins, ranging from 1.5-2 inches in diameter. The yellow centers contrast beautifully with the pink petals that turn white over time.
Showy Evening Primrose can be rather invasive, spreading through seeds and runners, but their deep root system allows them to regrow each year, even after frost. These fragrant flowers attract a variety of beneficial insects, including butterflies, ladybugs, bumblebees, hummingbirds, and honeybees.
Sowing and Growing Sow Showy Evening Primrose seeds directly outdoors in spring, after the last frost. Scatter the tiny orange-brown seeds on the soil surface, pressing them in lightly. They require direct sunlight to germinate.
These perennials thrive in full sun and well-drained, sandy to poor soil, with temperatures above 65°F. Water the seeds daily until germination, which occurs in 7-10 days. Mature plants can be spaced 12-18 inches apart.
Why Choose Seed Needs? - Quality, fresh seeds for the current and following seasons - Generous quantities for sharing or saving - Beautifully illustrated packets with sowing instructions - No GMO products, with mostly open-pollinated and heirloom varieties - Exceptional germination rates when sown correctly - Tear-resistant, moisture-resistant packaging
